The client's brief was to reunite all the buildings on site for the first time since the reformation – one of the most significant events in the Abbey’s history.
The client brief was to develop the Black Gate and the Castle Keep as a hub for historic interpretation and education, opening the buildings to the public and making them fully accessible for the first time.
Conserving one of the world’s most important pieces of industrial heritage, which had been stationary since the 1950s and had fallen into disrepair. The project is the first in a phase of regeneration for Elsecar village, enhancing the visitor experience by re-opening the site with improved access.
Rationalising the spaces within the building to create a single family residence and provide access to all floors from one main staircase.
