Purcell and Focus Consultants were appointed by Lincolnshire County Council to undertake a feasibility study. The objective was to ascertain whether an aviation centre and heritage attraction can be created at the site.

A home for the Red Arrows

Royal Air Force Scampton is an RAF station in Lincolnshire that is steeped in military history and is the home to the Red Arrows.

The main challenge faced by the team was how to make the changes on site while it continues to be an important operational RAF base. It was important to weigh up the objectives of both sides in that the base should remain operational, but the scope to fulfil its potential as a valuable cultural, historical and economic asset for the local area is fully realised.

RAF Scampton

Flexible and functional

The feasibility study explored several options for the site which include a vacant officer’s mess, four Grade II listed hangars, many unused RAF buildings as well as buildings that are currently operational. The options consider development of the museum at different scales which will largely be dependent on the collection of planes they are able to obtain.
