Hugh Jones
Hugh is a Graduate of Architecture and a member of the Asia Pacific BIM Steering Group, championing the use of BIM software throughout the region. He provides ad hoc support to the Purcell Technical Leadership Group and is a member of the Purcell Design Programme, both encouraging and inspiring better design communication and knowledge sharing across the company.
Based in Hobart, Hugh has experience supporting projects in Melbourne and Hong Kong, assisting project leads on various stages of contract administration. He has a well-rounded skillset which includes working with design and construction documentation and delivery of fee proposals. He also completed a series of units in Austria throughout his Masters degree, supporting on various architectural projects as part of the Global Leadership Programme.
Hugh has thrown himself into the profession since his days at university. From being on the Tasmanian Chapter Council of the Australian institute of Architects (AIA) in his second year, to sitting on the Student Organised Network of Architects (SONA) and the Architecture Society at UTAS, his involvement in organisations outside of his studies comprise management of memberships, events and sponsorships.
Having started his career in commercial architecture, Hugh made the shift to heritage architecture in the pursuit of new challenges, stating that working in heritage is what keeps him engaged and excited.
‘Working with heritage buildings is such an enjoyable challenge because you have to stick within the parameters of the existing fabric. I love being told I’m not allowed to move or touch stuff, being told that the building has to stay exactly how it is. When you’re not allowed to interfere, you have to come up with all these innovative and wonderful ways to reach the desired outcome.’
Hugh is currently treasurer of the 2023 Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN), part of the AIA, and his role is centred around maintaining the budget through sponsors and national funding. He is also involved in running workshops and events to support the continued development of the committee.
