Our brief was to design a bespoke new five bedroom family home for relaxing and entertaining. The clients wanted a light, open and elegant feel to the house and to create ‘a modern but timeless’ piece of architecture that worked within its suburban context with a low carbon footprint.

One of the major challenges was to balance the budget against client expectations. We carefully selected products and materials that helped to keep within the budget without losing the integrity of the design. The clients wanted a contemporary house but also wanted the design to make sensible use of a fine suburban site.

Our concept comprises two buildings, the two storey main house which visually connects with its complementary, single story garden pavilion. Rather than focusing on walls and boundaries, the clients were asked to use their imaginations. Based on this we created a synthesis of simple spaces grouped around an open core of hall, landing, living room and kitchen. The pavilion features a sedum roof and provides space for the family to sit and enjoy the garden.
