Situated 18 miles from London in stunning Hertfordshire countryside, the Grade II and II* Listed Grove Hotel was refurbished and developed by Purcell to extend the Glasshouse Restaurant and Bar as part of a greater programme of works.
The main Glasshouse Restaurant and Bar were extended and transformed as an integral part of the overall improvement of guest facilities at this award-winning and highly-acclaimed hotel. Both facilities needed to accommodate increased capacity to satisfy demand throughout the week as the hotel is as fully booked at weekends with families as it is with function delegates and dining guests during the week. A new chef has been inspirational in creating an exceptional range of cuisine which will be available when The Glasshouse reopens in May 2019.
It was a requirement that The Grove had to remain fully operational throughout. Accordingly, the Purcell team came up with a creative solution to minimise the impact of site operatives and the build programme on guests’ experience. All hotel services had to be maintained and site access needed to be minimised and discrete. Investigative opening-up and surveying needed to be undertaken out of the restaurant and bar operating hours and new finishes needed to be carefully considered to maintain existing floor and ceiling levels.
The glazed-metal Glasshouse extensions were prefabricated off-site and lifted over the hotel into position in under three days with new food stations, kitchen theatre stations and bespoke joinery items also being assembled off-site to improve the speed of installation. Materials and finishes were chosen to maintain the overall design integrity, whilst minimising trades and build programme on site.
The new extensions increase capacity and transform guest experience and are supplemented with an improved kitchen theatre complete with glass food fridges, fresh pasta and wok stations interspersed with charcuterie, carvery, salad bars and stone pizza oven. A separate dessert station leads into the new extension which opens out onto a terrace with ponds, a large rose garden and fire pit. The extension features a vast, triple-height glass conservatory framing beautiful garden views bringing the outside in. The new space is bright and welcoming, creating a sense of light even on dark days.
