Welcoming Ruth Atkinson to Purcell as Partner in the London Studio

28 May 2025

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ruth Atkinson as a Partner in our London studio, where she will help strengthen and expand our expertise in the Cultural and Public sectors.

Ruth brings with her a distinguished career spanning over 18 years at BDP, where she led a range of significant and complex projects across the heritage and contemporary sectors. Her experience encompasses both public and private sector work, with a particular focus on large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects that demand strategic oversight, clear communication, and collaborative delivery.

Notably, Ruth played a key role in the Restoration and Renewal Programme at the Palace of Westminster, leading multidisciplinary teams in navigating the highly sensitive and complex requirements of this nationally significant project. Other highlights include her work on the Royal Albert Hall masterplan and Google Headquarters at King’s Cross.

Ruth is passionate about the intersection of heritage and contemporary design, and is committed to delivering thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable solutions. She has a strong interest in universal design, developed through her work on accessibility interventions in historic environments, and is keen to further this agenda at Purcell. She will be working on the British Museum project as part of the wider collaborative design team under Lina Ghotmeh Architects.

Speaking about her new role, Ruth shared:

“Purcell’s collective ambition strongly resonated with me, particularly the practice’s dedication to collaboration, craft, and cultural value. I am excited to contribute my experience to such a talented team and to play a role in shaping the next chapter of the practice’s work in London and beyond.”

Outside of practice, Ruth enjoys long-distance walking and is a classic car enthusiast, often taking her 1957 vehicle to events around the UK. Her appreciation for post-war and modernist architecture also informs her broader professional interests.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Ruth to the practice. We look forward to the insight, leadership, and perspective she will bring to our projects and to the wider team.
