Purcell to help lead major transformation of The Wallace Collection

The Wallace Collection has appointed a team led by Selldorf Architects, with Purcell and Lawson Ward Studio, to deliver a major masterplan for Hertford House, the museum’s historic London home. Central to the project is Purcell, the UK’s largest heritage architecture practice and long-standing advisor to the museum
With over two decades of experience working with the Wallace Collection—including the award-winning restoration of the Great Gallery—Purcell brings unmatched expertise in conserving and adapting historic buildings. Their role will be key in ensuring the revitalisation remains sensitive to the building’s Grade II* listed status while improving access, sustainability, and visitor experience.
Purcell joins Selldorf Architects, known for their cultural work globally, and Lawson Ward Studio, specialists in learning environments. Together, they will reimagine gallery spaces, create a new Learning Centre, and modernise back-of-house areas, all while preserving the unique character of Hertford House.
Launched in the museum’s 125th anniversary year, the masterplan reflects a renewed commitment to public engagement and long-term sustainability. Design development and stakeholder consultations will continue through 2025, alongside a major fundraising initiative.
Director of the Wallace Collection, Dr Xavier Bray, said: “The Wallace Collection occupies a unique place in the national and international museum landscape – an exceptional collection in an extraordinary historic home. We are delighted to be working with Selldorf Architects, Purcell and Lawson Ward Studio on the next chapter in the museum’s history. Their thoughtful, collaborative approach and track record of working with complex heritage buildings gives us great confidence as we embark on this transformational journey.”
