Purcell shortlisted for AJ100 Community Impact and Sustainability Initiative awads

30 May 2025

We have been shortlisted for two prestigious AJ100 Awards in 2025, recognising our commitment to community engagement and sustainable design.

The transformation of Bristol's former Bridewell Magistrates’ Court into The Courts, a creative enterprise hub for young people, has earned a nomination for the Community Impact of the Year Award.

Developed in partnership with local charity Creative Youth Network, the project places youth empowerment at its core. A Youth Advisory Board, comprising individuals aged 15 to 24, was instrumental in guiding the design process, ensuring the space met the needs of its future users. Additionally, workshops conducted with Design West's #ShapeMyCity programme have introduced local students to architecture and construction careers, fostering early engagement in the built environment.

In the sustainability category, our collaboration with the City of London Corporation on the Heritage Building Retrofit Toolkit has also been recognised. This nine-step methodology provides guidance for retrofitting historic buildings, aiming to balance decarbonisation efforts with the preservation of architectural heritage. Launched at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in 2024, the toolkit supports the Corporation's goal of achieving net-zero emissions in the Square Mile by 2040, offering practical solutions for the city's 600-plus listed buildings.

These nominations underscore our dedication to integrating community involvement and sustainability into architectural practice, setting a benchmark for socially and environmentally responsible design.
