Today the whole team from our Oxford studio visited a local site, containing two new buildings, both currently under construction for St Catherine’s College. It was fantastic for the team to inhabit the concrete structure of the Graduate Centre, giving a first glimpse of the spaces and key views. The Accommodation Pavilion sample bedroom is nearly complete - once approved it will be repeated to create 78 new student bedrooms.

The new Graduate Centre

Purcell was appointed to extend upon Stephen Hodder’s previous accommodation pavilions. In addition to this, the brief included the design of a new Graduate Centre, containing a Seminar Room, Common Room and multi-use event space.

The team on site

St Catherine’s College are custodians of some of the finest post-war architecture in the UK and strongly believe it is their duty to safeguard it for the future. As such, our design proposals were carefully considered, with the new buildings designed to ensure they are worthy of the context, whilst meeting the client’s requirements.

The new accommodation pavilions

78 student bedrooms will be added to the site in a triptyque of three-storey pavilions, next to Jacobsen’s 1960s Grade I-listed original college buildings. The scheme is due to be completed in autumn this year.
