Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Façade art and new lobby wows guests

9 February 2017

The major renovation of Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London is well underway, with its dramatic new lobby and reception area completed last month. The restoration of this five-star hotel will significantly enhance its existing guest rooms and facilities as well as provide additional luxury penthouse suites.

Earlier this month, the hotel unveiled its new cover for the main Hyde Park façade, a 64m x 24.5m collage by pop artist Sir Peter Blake. The artwork, “Our Fans”, celebrates the 50th anniversary of his album sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club. It features 100 of the hotel’s most famous guests.

Purcell is the architect and lead designer for the 12,000sqm renovation. The works are being carried out by contractor Vinci in two nine-month phases and is due to complete in Spring 2018.

The hotel remains open while the works progress. The first phase covers all rooms in the Knightsbridge wing. The second phase will renovate rooms overlooking Hyde Park and two penthouse suites will be built as an extension on the 9th floor. As part of the works, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental will be renovated along with the hotel’s bar and two restaurants, Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner and Bar Boulud. The interior design works are being overseen by Joyce Wang Studio and Tihany Design.
