£3.8m in funding secured for the restoration of Alice Billing House

We are proud to continue our collaboration with Creative Land Trust and Newham Council on the transformation of Alice Billing House in Stratford, following the announcement of £3.8 million in new funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and other key partners.

The Grade II-listed former firefighters’ quarters will be restored and repurposed into affordable studios for local artists, with new public gardens and a pavilion. This second phase builds on the successful delivery of the South Building in 2024, already home to 25 creatives.

“This project is a powerful example of how heritage can be reimagined as a catalyst for community, creativity, and regeneration,” said Elizabeth Smith, Partner and Chair at Purcell. “We’re thrilled that the funding will allow us to complete the restoration of the North Block and return the entire site to public use.”

The revitalised site will support up to 42 artists by early 2027 and offer ongoing outreach and engagement led by Grow Studios, firmly embedding Alice Billing House in Newham’s cultural and social fabric.
