Wakefield Kirkgate Station
Conservation Management Plan to inform future development
Location:
Wakefield
Client:
Network Rail
Building Period:
19th and 20th Century

We prepared a Conservation Management Plan to support an application for Listed Building Consent and planning permission as part of an anticipated conservation-led regeneration of Wakefield Kirkgate Station. Our report will enable a thorough understanding of the site’s regional context and development and its capacity for managed change.

Our recommended conservation principles and design proposals will also provide a foundation from which to address the station’s outstanding conservation issues and rejuvenate its buildings to meet the needs and expectations of a modern and expanding railway in the 21st Century.

One of the most interesting facets of the project was the functional nature of the site. The Grade II listed mid-late Victorian station building and its curtilage includes the platforms with a mixture of historic and modern canopies, the forecourt and adjacent maintenance area.

Network Rail recently secured planning permission to replace the historic canopies, which were in very poor condition, with modern structures. Our visualization provides an example of what is possible.
