Victoria Pier is a key feature in the Colwyn Bay Regeneration Plan due to its in-situ original Victorian structure, pier deck and intricate cast iron balustrade. Following years of neglect, the pier deck and main pavilion fell into a dilapidated state of repair which has obstructed the use of the landslide building as a going concern, leading to its recent closure.

We were commissioned to restore the pier as a viable and sustainable mixed-use facility for visitors and local residents in the heart of Colwyn Bay. The new designs maximise the pier’s future commercial viability and create three distinct commercial, entertainment and education zones and provide a striking juxtaposition with the existing Victorian Pier.

The restoration carries an extra dimension of significance due to the potential existence of significant 20th Century murals within the main pavilion by eminent artists Eric Ravilious and Mary Adshead.

A not-for-profit entity will run the pier and finance its ongoing maintenance and upkeep through the provision of small retail units and the use of the main pavilion as a unique conferencing and events space.

The proposed designs took inspiration from the historic use of bathing machines and beach huts within the bay and the opportunity to provide small, niche market retail units.

The proposed landward building provides retail space and animation to the promenade, which will bring much needed life to the seafront and strengthen links with the town centre.

An important aspect of sourcing funding is the provision of community education. The new seaward education pavilion allows links to the offshore wind-farm and views back to shore presenting many opportunities for interpretation.
