We created a spa that intimately relates to its setting with a design that blurs the edges between the built and natural form.

A groundwater heating and cooling system was installed and buried in the surrounding meadowland, connecting the spa with the energy centre. This geothermal array provides a carbon reduction of 41% compared with an air-cooled system.

The spa is oriented to the sun’s path to maximise the natural light it receives with the exterior windows incorporating solar efficient glazing and overhanging eaves to avoid solar gain.

The living roof allows the spa to grow a range of plants for use in natural treatments as well as sedum to merge the building with the landscape. Skylights face both directions around the circular edge to capture the most daylight for the inner rooms.

Clerestory openings in the living roof are designed to maximise the light reaching the inner rooms as it radiates off the curved circulation spine. The result is naturally diffused daylight reaching the interior spaces buried within the woodland landscape.

The spa climate is monitored through a central building management system and the different thermal zones are changed depending on the requirements at any particular time. Each treatment room has local controls to ensure guest comfort.

The Spatisserie oriel window is fully retractable allowing an open and natural relationship to the surrounding landscape and western skies beyond.

The ultra-violet pool has reduced backwash and overall water consumption and significantly reduced energy requirement without the excessive need of chemicals. Sustainability measures use the hot air produced to reheat the water.
