We created this eco-luxury spa so that the building is buried within the landscape, emerging under a living roof of chamomile, lavender and thyme. This pioneering design meets the client’s aspirations: the building’s volume and footprint are minimal and the spa is intimately related to its sensitive green belt setting.

Coworth is the world’s first spa to be built from carbon negative lime hemp walling with a predominantly timber structure. The timber glulam monocoque beam structure has only 4% carbon comparative to steel. Lime hemp walling contributes to the spa’s carbon negative design and a biomass boiler and ground water heat transfer system meet 50% of the spa’s energy demands. The green agenda was applied throughout to create a truly eco-luxury environment.

A groundwater heating and cooling system was installed and buried in the surrounding meadowland, connecting the spa with the energy centre. This geothermal array provides a carbon reduction of 41% compared with an air-cooled system.

The living roof allows the spa to grow a range of plants for use in natural treatments as well as sedum to merge the building with the landscape. Skylights face both directions around the circular edge to capture the most daylight for the inner rooms.

Clerestory openings in the living roof are designed to maximise the light reaching the inner rooms as it radiates off the curved circulation spine. The result is naturally diffused daylight reaching the interior spaces buried within the woodland landscape.

The spa climate is monitored through a central building management system and the different thermal zones are changed depending on the requirements at any particular time. Each treatment room has local controls to ensure guest comfort.

The ultra-violet pool has reduced backwash and overall water consumption and significantly reduced energy requirement without the excessive need of chemicals. Sustainability measures use the hot air produced to reheat the water.
