Bowood is a Georgian country house set in 2000 acres of stunning Grade I listed parkland landscaped by Capability Brown. We were commissioned to create a luxury hotel and leisure spa complex with exemplary environmental standards to reflect the rich heritage of the Bowood estate.

The sensitivity of the site, which is close to four listed buildings set within listed parkland, required thoughtful consideration to develop the design. Thoughtful siting and massing of the building and carefully chosen materials have ensured that the hotel is seamlessly integrated into its historic surroundings with beautiful views across the parkland.

We believe that Bowood is the first hotel in the UK to use reed bed drainage, which serves the entire estate. Along with other impressive environmental features including a biomass boiler and a sedum roof, the new spa is the embodiment of eco-luxury.

Extensive services were needed to meet the requirements of the luxury hotel. They are concealed in uncluttered, welcoming spaces to avoid detracting from the high standards of the interiors.

A wide range of other environmental measures are incorporated within the design, including low energy lighting throughout the hotel and an ozone-treated swimming pool.

The range of suites includes vaulted bedrooms into the roof forms as well as bespoke interiors with estate references. Views overlook the entrance courtyard walled garden or the expansive deer park.

The 84-seat restaurant was conceived as an orangery linking the new hotel to one of the listed tithe barns. The barn is used as a kitchen for the adjoining conference and golf facilities.

The freeform sedum roof over the spa increases thermal efficiency and reduces the visual impact of the building in its registered landscape context. It also enhances views from the hotel bedrooms.
